The sign on this plant at the farmer’s market read “Papyrus.” I learned it’s actually a cousin to the Papyrus plant and they both belong to the genus Cyperus. This species, Cyperus alternifolius, is commonly called an Umbrella Palm and can be identified by its grass-like leaves. Cyperus papyrus, which was used to make paper in ancient times can be identified by its thread-like leaves. (Cyperus alternifolius)
